It’s Christmas Time!

Merry Christmas everyone!!!! :)

It’s my favorite time of the year! Everything seems so wonderful during the holiday season! Beautiful decorations, yummy (sometimes excess) food, friends, family and all that jazz define the beauty of Christmas! :)

Before the Christmas break, we were tasked to create an ad for Starbucks Holiday Drinks! Yum! And this is what I made. :)

image

This ad is centered on connecting the drinks with the joy and warmth of the Christmas season.

My message statement is: Starbucks Holiday drinks create special moments with friends & family. Christmas after all is all about the love, hope and the joy we give to other people. :)

Aaaand I also made another ad!!  But upon submission, I figured the other one was more clean so I decided not to pass this. This was the first study I made! :)

I can’t help it, I just adore Santaaa! See previous post for reference! hihi

image

In a few hours, the sky will reveal wonders and colors I have always loved! Fireworks!! YAY Buuut I hope despite all the distractions there is, let’s all take a moment to greet the celebrant today…Jesus, Happy Birthday! :)

And to everyone, I wish you a happy and meaningful Christmas!!! Happy Holidays! :)

Package Design

Hi! This is one of our Art Direction Plate. We were tasked to design a packaging for a consumer product and brand of our choice. We also need to create a physical mock-up of the design we will be making in actual size.

I don’t know whats gotten into me that I chose to make a package for Trolli Gloworms. I had so many things in mind (cute girly stuffs) but in the end, I made this. Crazy weird. I don’t even like/eat Trolli. :D

So anyway, Here’s my output :)

Front

Back

My concept for Trolli was all about Medusa. Since Trolli is a product that sells gummy worms, I figured it would be neat if the worms had a queen. And what better queen for them than Medusa, right? Only this time, she’s no queen of snakes anymore, just plain o’l gloworms!

The template I made for the box! Made a bunch of mock-ups before I got it right!

I’m so happy it turned out the way I wanted it to be. It’s my 1st time making anything like this so pardon the lack of creativity in terms of the box. :)

Happy Sunday friends! :)

Book cover

Hello Sembreak! :)

Finally! Time for some well deserved relaxation after the very aggravating yet meaningful semester!

In my opinion this is probably the best sem to date…not because I had a lot of fun or got good grades but because I am blessed by the gift of self-discovery and true friendship. :) Maybe it sounds too melodramatic but the truth is, it is a very painful discovery…but I know it’s all God’s will. :)

Apart from all the hysteria, I am still very thankful for all the blessings I have especially the gift of creativity. :)

This here is my Art Direction Plate. We were tasked to create a cover for a book we will be assigned to. I was digging for the “Alice in Wonderland” cover but I got “The Catcher in the Rye” instead. I thought I could well illustrate the Alice cover since I know the story and the feel of the book but on the other hand, I also wanna challenge myself to different genres of art. Not just the cutesy colorful stuff I always do. That being said, I welcomed the thought of doing the other cover without any hesitation or complains. :)

I never read the book, The Catcher in the Rye. Heck I don’t know anything about it! So I researched about it and found out it covers a very interesting and significant subject..self-discovery and growing up.

The reason behind the title is that Holden (the main character) pictures himself as the sole guardian of a group of children running and playing in a huge rye field on the edge of a cliff. His job is to catch the children if they come close to falling off the brink, to be a “catcher in the rye”. He dreams to save children from losing their innocence.

If you notice, my design is also based on that idea. I gave the bar code a special touch. I made it look like tall buildings because the setting of the book is at New York. :)

I personally love to read this book someday. It tackles most of my favorite topics and I think I can relate to Holden, a confused misunderstood teenager.

For now, my only wish is to live a life without regrets and to always smile..because there are so many things in life to be happy about. :)

SMILE :)

Olympics Plate

Hi! It’s been a really sloppy and lazy week for me. I’ve had abundant naps, TV all day till dawn, profuse internet freedom and food insanity! I hope I’m not sending the wrong signal or whatever but this is how I spent my week long  intrams vacation. Nothing fancy, just me having the time of my life at home. :D

Not to sound weird and everything but sometimes just lying in the sofa with my blanky on and some cheese snack while watching old cartoons is prolly one of those moments I would never ever get bored of doing…even if I get older. :)

So apart from all the hysteria and drama brought about by my awesome week, let’s get back to business. LOL What business?

I’m talking about my Midterm plate for Art Direction! :) Well, it’s nothing to be excited about since I think I failed in the execution of my idea. I know, you’ve heard me say this excuse a million times before and I blame my procrastination for the death of all my rotten ideas.

Anyway, the instruction of our plate was to make individual ads about the Philippine Olympic Team specifically in boxing, judo, swimming, archery and athletics. Its aim is to generate support, pride and awareness to the Philippine Athletes competing in London.

I was going for the vintage card sorta feel for my ads because I’d like people to go back and remember the golden years of Philippine Sports. I don’t know but I always find beauty in the old-fashioned ways. Hence the inspiration for this plate. :)

Boxing

Archery

Swimming

Judo

Athletics

The tagline I chose to use for this Ad is “Going beyond gold”. It’s influenced from the original tagline “Philippines: Go for Gold!” For me, the latter seems so broad and vague because all countries aspire to get the gold. What I want for the Philippines is something more than gold..because that is what we deserve. For a country that’s been through a lot I don’t think a gold medal can suffice the lack of nationalism we have towards our country. Our goal shouldn’t be limited to the gold medal; it must surpass the test of our own expectations. Well, that’s just my point of view. :))

In each sport I incorporated a saying/tagline/words of encouragement to give more impact to the ads. And the colors I chose…hmm I didn’t really think about that. I just used vintage-ish colors to match my “theme”.

I’m not sure if my ads will be effective because it’s not the usual bright colored ads shown. It’s a more simple and calm approach in advertising the Philippine Team..I think. :)

The most important thing I learned from this plate: Procrastination is self-sabotage. It is the grave upon which opportunity is buried.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. One thing’s for sure though, I can no longer handle not sleeping, drinking too much coffee and sitting in the same chair while facing the laptop for hours just so I can finish the plate I just started the day before submission! A lesson I should have learned a long time ago. But it’s never to late for a new beginning! :))

No one can do everything but everyone can do something. :)

*Credits to the owners of the photos I used! Thanks for making my plate possible! :))

Breakfast of Champions

My first plate for our art direction class under Ms. Carla! Hmm I know it’s lame but whatever. I’m just glad I made something relevant. :D

So enough about my self-pity and on with my plate. We were tasked to make a logo for a make-believe restaurant named “Breakfast of Champions”. It serves breakfast all day long with bottomless milk, coffee, choco drinks! If I’m not mistaken, this is Ms. Carla’s dream business! :D

And here is my logo! (colored and BNW)

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but the logo is actually in the shape of a sunny side up egg..which is a staple breakfast item. From here people would understand the nature of the resto and the kinds of food that are served. If you look closely, you would see that inside the yolk of the egg is a silhouette of a crown. This is to establish the restaurant’s name “Breakfast of Champions”. On the sides are the spoon and fork to give people the idea that it is a diner.

I’m not so happy of how this plate turned out. It lacks some elegance I think for a restaurant that doesn’t come cheap. And I’m not so sure about the egg outline. It could send the wrong hint to prospective customers that it’s just a “silogan”. Hmmm yeah. Maybe.

I’d love to hear from you. What do you think? :))

SKRILLEX

Hi! It’s been awhile tumblr! Sorry if I haven’t posted lately. Been too busy with plates and all the hullabaloo of being a student! And I say all that positively. ;)

So anyway, Let me share with you my plates from our art direction class! We were tasked to design an album artwork, including a derivative poster and flyer for artist named: Skrillex

Our design must be based on the Art/Graphic Design Movement we were assigned to randomly. I was (un)fortunately ascribed to Deconstruction Art Movement. Now it’s not something to be upset about. It’s just that when I saw the samples, I couldn’t imagine doing those kind of art. I mean, I don’t hold anything against deconstruction artists, it simply isn’t my style. :)

Here are some of the samples:

I found this plate extremely hard to do since I didn’t understand most of my earlier research about the art movement. It wasn’t as popular as the other movements such as Pop Art or Art Noveau. And another thing, I had no idea who Skrillex is and  his kind of music. I was so hesitant to start with this plate coz honestly, i didn’t know where to start!

A day before submission came and I had to do something. I didn’t want to fail. :’( And so I took the plunge and started designing. I didn’t have any plan at first. I just did my research and gathered inspiration from other deconstruction artworks…which later on gave birth to my Skrillex plate! :))

Abraham Lincoln once said “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” *Research is everything!

Here is my output! :)

Album Artwork

Promotional Poster

Flyer

I got the inspiration for my plate from the Layout of Ray Gun Magazine. It looks cluttered; texts are everywhere, different typeface and sizes used, no uniformity or visual harmony. What it had was something eye-catching and emphasizing. You take more time looking through the page as if trying to decipher what it really meant. It stimulates the minds of the readers to think and to decode what is the message behind it.

The background is that of an abstract painting and sketch of a walking man to define the kind of music Skrillex has which is “dubstep”. There’s a photo of him in action as a DJ mixing songs to give people the idea of what the album is about. I played with the title, “My name is Skrillex”, reflecting and rotating different words to give proper emphasis on each of them.  Looking closely, you’ll see different words encrypted all over. These are actually the title of his songs deconstructed so people would really take a closer look. Above, you would see text saying, “dubstep + electro + house + fidget”. This is how Skrillex describes his kind of music in one of his interviews.

Since deconstruction is rejection of Swiss Graphic Design (SGD), I chose fonts that were dissimilar to the latter. In SGD they often use san serif typeface because it is simple and easy to read. The most common typeface they use is Helvetica. In deconstruction, you need to choose typeface that grabs attention and attracts people. It is more than just being readable; it wants to make a statement.

This plate was a huge challenge. It taught me that as an artist, you can’t always choose the projects you want. We need to be flexible and versatile to make it big in the industry. We need to widen our perspective and be open to anything that life offers us…Take on the challenge rather than give up when you haven’t even tried. After all, great things start small. Never hesitate to take the first step. (I hope that made sense!)

“What good is readability when nothing in the text attracts one to even read it?”

Happy Sunday Friends! :)

Magazine Layout

Rationale:

My concept for this plate is a design that looks inspiring, appealing and engaging. I want it to look as composed as possible to give the reader’s a good feeling about the article. I incorporated a photo of a seemingly endless road with a girl deeply gazing at the horizon. This helps in providing a hint of what the composition is about – something motivating and thought-provoking. It somehow says that success is a journey, not a destination. Along the way you’ll be tested in many ways but what’s important is how you deal with them and how you learn from your mistakes. Your failure does not define you, your response does. These trying times make you a better person and if you just keep going, success will be within your reach. Like what Soichiro Honda said, “Success is 99% failure.”

Within the photo is the title of the article, “There’s no success quite like a good failure.” I made it pop against the photo to give it proper emphasis. After all, it is the main idea of the whole write –up and it sums up everything written by Nick Eagleton. I want the readers to remember and ponder on those words even after reading the whole article.

Below the title is a sentence from the write-up that will give more idea about the story. I want the first half of the spread to be as enticing that it shows off some information but not all so that the readers will continue to read the next half.

On the right half is where the article is positioned. I included photos of flying birds to set the mood and to give the readers visual appeal while reading. I chose flying birds because success is closely linked to flying – it gets you higher. And like birds, we also need to keep our feet on the ground to survive. :)

Sorry for this very long post. I was too tired captioning this plate that I just copy paste the rationale I made earlier. I hope the article is clear enough to read coz it’s really inspiring especially to designers. BTW, Nick Eagleton is a successful Creative Director abroad.

And for those wondering, this is my Art Direction Plate # 2: Magazine Layout.

Credits to the owner of that photo I grabbed from flickr. Thank you so much for the beautiful picture! :)

printmaking

After hours (approx. 8hours) of hard work and some minor hand injuries, I am happy to announce that I am finally done carving my printmaking plate! :)

If it’s not that obvious, my design is a silhouette of a bird calmly resting on the branch of a tree. Actually, my 1st design was that of a cute puppy but when I finished drawing and started, I realized it was so hard to carve its form. It’ll take a lot of precision which is something I don’t have..yet. :D

These are the awesome tools I used in carving my wood! :) They are sharp enough to use on the mahogany wood we bought. It saved me the hassle and expense of buying a rubber mallet and chisel.  :)

These carving tools cost less than those sold at National Bookstore. It only costs P220 at Diane and Candy Bookstore.

My brother is officially a hand model! LOL

Our teacher told us to carve where the grain runs. If the wood seems to be tearing, and your tools are sharp, you are probably going in the wrong direction. Turn around and carve in the opposite direction. You can also carve diagonally across the grain and even parallel to it, but if you carve upwards against the grain, it will only tear and splinter the wood.

Wood carving is fun especially if your tools are sharp. Dull tools will cause you no end of trouble. Your wood will rip and tear and you will cut yourself from having push too hard. Sharp tools take less effort and let you have more control.

Very important reminder when carving wood, carve in the direction against you so you wouldn’t get injuries that much. And, always be careful. Don’t rush because it’ll cost you more damage. I also had my share of minor wounds (3 cuts) in my left hand. Good thing it isn’t that serious. :)

I suggest you try doing prints the traditional way like what I did! It makes me appreciate more the people that came before us. They had to do everything the hard way before. Despite the lack/absence of technology, they still managed to bring beauty and art in this world. Now that’s totally lurid! :)

I gotta say, this summer is sooo different from the ones before. There wasn’t a day that I wanted it to end unlike before where I always complain how boring and dull my life is at home. Sure I still complain (don’t I always?) but it was never the serious type. And now I’m just so sad that summer is about to bid goodbye to us all because I feel I haven’t done everything I planned just yet.
I’ll be spending the next couple of days embracing summer with my cousins (the long awaited hang-out), my family (going to an island get-away again!!), lost relatives LOL (to attend fiesta at Leyte), friends (perhaps?), my buddylove (going on a biking adventure and movie marathon madness!) and most importantly, I’ll be spending much time with the ones I’m barely with on school days, my laptop (to do all the non-sense stuff I want), TV (my bestfriend LOL jk) and my bed (sleep overload!).
I hope I get the time of my life this last days of summer! And I wish you the same as well. Let’s make the most out of it!

Hi guys!! I’ve been away for quite some time due to unforeseen events of awesomeness! :D Well, first off I was so busy accomplishing requirements for finals and all the bazillion exams and plates that needed to be done before the deadlines. I was in a crisis at that time! But things started to shift my way after all the concerns has been addressed…Me and my art appreciation classmates went on a very unforgettable tour to Luzon (manila and BAGUIO)! It was a tour to remember :) So many memories to cherish…it couldn’t fit my 4gb camera mem card! haha!
Meanwhile on your tumblr dashboard…there’s a chance you could be seeing a super vain photo of me…with some shocking texts you might be curious to know… Before all the comments stir to a never-ending argument, let me first explain that the purpose of this photo is for our typography class and none of the above stated is true. (i meant the albums, launch date, etc) :) I bet if this was true, most people would raise not just one eyebrow but two! haha In weird amazement people would be wondering, how in the world did that always-out-of-tune-girl got an album? hahaha! I’m glad typo class gave us this chance to vent out our inner desires of being on a cover of something to be printed in poster size! A huge thick paper with your face on it! So odd yet so pleasing. :)
Anyway, after a week of being on hiatus guess what? I’ll be out again for a week-long island getaway with my family. :) Ahhh summer is love! I wish you all a beautiful and meaningful summer friends! Au revoir for now! xoxo

And because I don’t wanna see my previous post on the top of my blog, I had to upload this. :)
This is a part of my plate in typo. We made calendars and the theme I chose is family. But it’s not pretty obvious in that photo LOL. This was for the back page of the month of November and that’s my birth month. That’s why. :D Maybe I’ll share my calendar soon. :)

So you’re probably wondering what this photo is all about. Let me fill you in with the details of my life as an art student. :)
Last month (i think) one of our typo plate is to make a book cover design of an existing book which we think needs to be revamped. It took time for me to research a book I could use because I’m not really that familiar with books coz I’m no book worm. Although I’ve always wanted to be one, I find it hard to finish a book with more than 300 pages or books that aren’t using the glossy type of paper (I seriously hate those printed in newsprint because (i’m not being a drama queen) but it slightly hurts my hands every time I flip the pages and it’s difficult to read the texts in black against the gray-ish color of the paper. LOL)  or those with no pictures/drawings or books about murder, horror, reality and other related genres. You get my point right? But suspense and thrillers are an exception though. :)
So anyway, the most recent novel I’ve read is The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. If I’m not mistaken, it has 528 pages. :D The longest novel I have ever read so far in my 20 years of existence. LOL My brother the bookworm bought a copy two years ago and when he finished reading it, he keeps forcing me to read it so he can have someone to relate to. I finally gave it a shot last last year (2010) and to my astonishment, I finished the book! I couldn’t stop reading it because it was so attaching. But the sad thing about reading an awesome book is when I try to read another book, I didn’t want to finish it anymore. It wasn’t up to the level of the previous book and I just ended up disappointed. That’s probably the reason why the last few books I read were only short (100 pages or less) and children’s books. LOL I hope I get to read another awesome book this summer.
So about my plate, this is the original book cover. It was too plain and simple. The cover doesn’t speak much about the title so I gave it a try and drew something that would give more meaning to the cover. It’s not super neatly drawn because I’m a noob in using the tablet. :D
Sarah Dessen actually have many interesting and dainty books I could try reading over the summer. :)
And last thing, I’ll be busy the entire weekend due to our next typo plate which is to create a children’s book (6pages minimum) with our original story. It sounds fun and easy at first but when you think about all the illustrations that needs to be done, oh the horror! BUT, I can do this! I have conceived a perky idea for my story already. I hope I execute it properly!
BTW, I skipped class today due to over fatigue and headache. That’s the reason behind this super long post. I’m energized every time I blog/write things. :D
